About Students

Our Students

– Represent neighborhoods from all over Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn
– Speak numerous languages at home: Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, Filipino, English, and several Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Shanghainese, Fuzhounese, Wenzhounese, Taishanese, Mandarin, etc.)
– Takes taekwando and dance, are computer programmers, play basketball, volleyball, football, and other sports for fun and for teams, are singers, are musicians, and are awesome!
– commit to learning Chinese or English as a second language over four years of diligent study, on top of a typical high school curriculum


At QHSLS, we expect all students to achieve an Advanced Regents diploma. We’ve designed our program to provide students with additional math, science, and language to meet this goal. This means an extra period of class each day for most of our students.

Programming for 2015-16 includes:

English Language Arts and English as a New Language
Chinese as a New Language and Chinese Native Language Arts
Global History, US History, and AP US History
Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trigonometry, AP Statistics, AP Calculus
Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics
Theater, Vocal Music, Mock Trial, and Computer Applications

After School Activities

Tutoring by teachers and peers are available after school. Teachers also offer lunch-time office hours to support students in completing homework and projects.

Current after school activities include: music and dance club, chess, drama/improv, anime, math club, engineering, student government, and intramural badminton.
